Christopher Schulp: Director of Photography

Ever since my cousin, a Technical Producer, took me on a sports production when I was in 8th grade, I knew I was destined to be in the thick of the action, with a camera on my shoulder and a smile on my face. It should have been obvious from the day I made my own “video camera” out of pieces of cardboard and sticky tape in second grade, and I was the only kid in my neighborhood to beg for a Fisher-Price video camera (that recorded to audio cassette tapes)!

In my 15 years working in videography and production I’ve been on jobs ranging from single camera/single operator shoots, to 6 camera live sports broadcasts, to rock concerts and everything in between. I’ve shot sit-down news interviews, town hall webcasts, corporate events, live news and studio shoots, football, basketball… the list goes on and on!

I’ve always had a fascination with capturing life in motion, and I was just as enthralled with the technology that allowed it to happen. Obviously videography and cinematography are very creative fields, but I like to take on my shoots from a technical side as well. It’s one thing to turn on your camera and shoot video, but it’s an entirely different thing to be able to achieve the full potential of your equipment to expertly craft the look and feel of the finished product. Because of this, I spend almost as much time reading over technical documents as I do trade magazines.

When my eyes aren’t behind a viewfinder or fixed on an Avid timeline, I like to play percussion in my local community band and detail my car. If you can’t find me there, then I’m probably working on a household project, but not necessarily at my house.
